Lesson 05.4
Branding on a budget
You don't need custom everything to make an envelope feel branded — spend on the one or two touches subscribers actually notice first.
Where the money is best spent first
A custom sticker used as an envelope seal is the single highest-impact, lowest-cost branding move available: you're already printing stickers, so a small die-cut version of your logo costs almost nothing extra per unit and is the very first thing a member touches before they even open the mail. It does double duty as tamper-evidence and as a tiny piece of your brand they'll likely stick on a laptop or water bottle later.
After the seal, custom washi tape is the next best value. A short run of 10 rolls in your palette from a print-on-demand tape supplier costs roughly $60 to $90 and lasts hundreds of envelopes, giving you a branded wrap for a cost per envelope well under $0.10.
Printed tissue and where it stops being worth it
Custom printed tissue paper looks stunning in photos but usually needs a minimum order of 500 to 1,000 sheets to be cost-effective, putting the per-sheet cost at $0.15 to $0.30 depending on print complexity. It's worth it once you're shipping at that volume reliably; below that, plain coloured tissue with a stamped logo in one corner gets you 80 percent of the visual effect for a fraction of the commitment.
Resist the urge to brand everything at once. Pick one signature touch — the seal sticker is usually it — and let that carry your visual identity consistently every month, rather than spreading a small budget thin across five half-branded elements that don't quite land.
- Sticker seal: near-zero extra cost, highest visibility, do this first
- Custom washi: under $0.10/envelope once bought in a small run
- Printed tissue: only cost-effective above 500-1,000 unit minimums
- One consistent signature touch beats five half-finished ones
Free branding that costs only attention
Not every branded touch needs a purchase order. A consistent hand-drawn flourish on the card, a signature colour you always use for the return address, or simply always writing the same closing line on your note all build recognition for nothing but the design decision to keep them consistent, month after month.
Worth remembering
- A sticker seal gives the most brand impact for the least cost
- Custom washi is affordable in small runs, under $0.10 per envelope
- Printed tissue only pays off above 500-1,000 unit minimum orders
- Pick one signature touch rather than half-branding several
Do this before the next lesson
Design a die-cut seal sticker from art you already own and use it as your envelope closure next print run.
