Lesson 02.1
Cost per envelope, line by line
Most sticker clubs go under not because they don't sell, but because nobody added up the real cost of getting one envelope out the door.
The obvious costs
Start with materials: printable vinyl or paper, laminate, and ink or toner if you print in-house. A typical 5-sheet mailing on 4-mil printable vinyl with gloss laminate runs roughly $0.55 to $0.90 per sheet once you include ink coverage, which puts a five-sheet drop at $2.75 to $4.50 in raw sticker cost alone before anything else touches it.
Then add packaging: the mailer itself, any backing board, tissue or washi, and a thank-you card if you include one. Budget realistically, not optimistically — a rigid mailer alone is often $0.30 to $0.60, and card stock inserts add another $0.10 to $0.25 each.
The costs everyone forgets
Postage is the big one people underestimate, and it deserves its own lesson, but even a first-class flat envelope in the US typically runs $0.68 to $1.50 depending on weight and thickness. On top of that, payment processing fees quietly take 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction on most platforms, which on a $16 charge is roughly $0.76 gone before you've printed anything.
Then there's your subscription platform's own cut if you use one, typically 1-3% of revenue, plus the cost of the labels you print and the tape you use. None of these show up on a materials receipt, but they come out of the same $16.
- Vinyl, laminate and ink per sheet
- Mailer, backing board, tissue and cards
- Postage, which changes with weight — see the next lesson
- Payment processing (roughly 3% + $0.30 per charge)
- Subscription platform fee (roughly 1-3%)
- Labels, tape and the ten minutes of labour per envelope
Building your own cost sheet
Put every line above into a simple spreadsheet with one column per envelope, and total it before you set a price. On a real example: $3.80 stickers, $0.90 packaging, $1.10 postage, $0.76 payment fees, $0.30 platform fee comes to $6.86 per envelope. If you're charging $16, that's $9.14 of margin before your own time — which sounds healthy until you remember it needs to cover design hours, customer service and the occasional lost package.
Revisit this sheet every time a supplier changes a price or postage rates rise, because a five-cent increase per sheet across 300 members is $15 a month quietly gone, and a postage rate change can be worse. Treat the cost sheet as a living document, not a one-time exercise.
Worth remembering
- List every cost, not just stickers — packaging and fees add up fast
- Payment processing alone can be 3% plus $0.30 per charge
- A full cost sheet often lands between $5 and $8 per envelope
- Revisit the sheet whenever any supplier or postage rate changes
Do this before the next lesson
Build a spreadsheet listing every cost per envelope from materials to processing fees, and total it before you price a single tier.
